House Wash NZ · Auckland & Northland

Pre-paint house washing in Auckland & Northland

Before the new colour goes on, the old walls need a proper clean. Dust, green growth and powdery old paint can all get in the painter’s way.

We wash exterior surfaces ahead of repainting, with the method matched to the cladding and its condition. Tell us what your painter plans to coat and we’ll quote the washing work clearly.

Before the first coat

Why wash a house before painting?

Run your hand along an older weatherboard and you may find a chalky film on your fingers. Add dust under the eaves or mould on a shaded wall, and the painter has more to deal with than faded colour.

A pre-paint wash removes surface build-up so the condition underneath is easier to assess. It is an early step in exterior paint preparation, before the painter tackles repairs and coating work.

  • Dirt and road grime
  • Algae and surface growth
  • Cobwebs and sheltered build-up
  • Salt and airborne residue
  • Chalky residue from old paint
  • Contamination around joinery
One practical point: A quick blast of water may not remove chalk from weatherboards. Let us know if the old paint rubs off as a powder so we can discuss the approach before quoting.

A wash for the repainting job

What our pre-paint wash covers

We can discuss washing suitable exterior walls and cladding, eaves, soffits, fascia and areas around doors and windows. The exact scope depends on what is being painted, the finish already on the house and safe access to each area.

Timber weatherboards and older joinery need care. We choose a method for the surface rather than assuming the same pressure will suit every wall. If you also need a fence, deck or roof prepared, ask us to include those areas in the quote.

For a useful quote

Send the painting scope if you have it

Your address, a few photos, the number of levels and the areas being repainted are a good start. Mention peeling paint, soft timber, difficult access and the date your painter expects to begin.

If the painter has specified a cleaning method or product, send us those details too. We can then agree what washing we can provide.

From enquiry to painter

Plan the wash around your painting job

A little planning helps avoid washing an area the painter is not touching, or leaving a difficult section out of the quote.

01 / Show us

Share the surfaces

Send the address, photos and the painter’s scope if available. Tell us about any roof, fence or deck you also want assessed.

02 / Agree the work

We check the condition

We discuss cladding, paint condition and access, then set out which areas are included in the pre-paint cleaning quote.

03 / Allow for drying

Leave time before painting

We arrange the wash ahead of coating work. Your painter should confirm when the surfaces are dry and ready for their next preparation steps.

Pre-paint wash questions

Is a pre-paint wash different from a regular house wash?

Both clean exterior surfaces. With a pre-paint wash, we look at what your painter will coat and pay attention to build-up such as dirt, growth and chalky old paint. We agree the cleaning scope and timing before the painting work begins.

Should I wash my house before repainting?

Most exterior repainting jobs need a clean surface first. Dirt, mould residue and chalking should be dealt with as part of preparation. Ask your painter what they require for the particular cladding and paint system.

Will a pre-paint house wash remove peeling paint?

Loose paint may come away during cleaning, but washing is not a promise to strip the old coating. The painter still needs to assess unsound paint and carry out any scraping, sanding, repairs or priming required.

Can you pre-paint wash weatherboards and older homes?

Often, yes, but we need to consider the timber, existing paint, joinery and any areas that could let water in. Tell us about soft timber or peeling paint so we can discuss a suitable approach rather than assume high pressure is appropriate.

How long before painting should the house be washed?

Leave enough time for the surfaces to dry fully, but there is no single number of hours for every house. Weather, shade, cladding and the painting specification all matter. Your painter should confirm when the surface is ready for the next step.

How much does a pre-paint house wash cost?

Price depends on the area being washed, height, access, cladding and condition of the old coating. Send us the address, photos and painting scope; we’ll quote the washing work you actually need.
